Strawberry jam

A representation of Strawberry jam

Strawberry jam is a popular spread made from strawberries, gelling sugar and lemon juice. Strawberries are healthy fruits that contain lots of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. But are they also suitable for dogs? And what about jam? In this article, you'll find out everything you need to know about strawberry jam as an ingredient for dogs.

What is strawberry jam?

Strawberry jam is a jam made from cooked strawberries, gelling sugar and lemon juice. Gelling sugar is a special sugar that contains pectin and citric acid. Pectin is a vegetable gelling agent obtained from apples or citrus fruits. Citric acid is a natural preservative that lowers the pH value of the jam and thus prevents the growth of bacteria and mold.

Strawberry jam is mostly used as a spread, but can also be used for baking or as a filling for cakes or tarts. You can buy strawberry jam ready-made or make it yourself. You only need three ingredients and around 15 minutes to prepare it. In contrast to the store-bought version, there are no artificial additives, just lots of fruit!

Are strawberries healthy for dogs?

Strawberries are generally healthy for dogs as long as they are fed in moderation. Strawberries contain lots of vitamins (especially vitamin C), minerals (such as potassium, magnesium and calcium) and antioxidants (such as flavonoids and anthocyanins), which can strengthen the immune system and reduce inflammation. Strawberries also contain fiber, which aids digestion, and enzymes that can clean teeth.

However, strawberries also have a high sugar content, which can lead to obesity or diabetes if too many are fed. In addition, some dogs may be allergic to strawberries or have a poor tolerance to them. You should therefore only ever give small amounts of strawberries and pay attention to how the dog reacts to them. If the dog develops diarrhea, vomiting or a skin rash, you should stop giving him strawberries immediately.

Is strawberry jam harmful to dogs?

Strawberry jam is more harmful to dogs than fresh strawberries because it contains much more sugar. Sugar is not only unhealthy for dogs, but also dangerous. Too much sugar can lead to tooth decay, obesity, diabetes or even life-threatening hypoglycemia. Sugar can also lead to an increase in blood sugar levels, which in turn leads to a drop in serotonin levels. Serotonin is a hormone that is responsible for mood and well-being. Low serotonin levels can lead to depression or aggression in dogs.

Strawberry jam also contains citric acid, which can irritate the gastrointestinal tract of dogs. Citric acid can also attack the tooth enamel of dogs and lead to tooth damage. Therefore, dogs should not be given strawberry jam or only very rarely and in very small quantities.

Strawberry jam is a delicious spread for humans, but not suitable for dogs. While fresh strawberries can be healthy for dogs in small amounts, strawberry jam is too sugary and acidic for dogs. Too much sugar and citric acid can lead to serious health problems in dogs, such as obesity, diabetes, tooth decay or gastrointestinal problems. That's why it's better to give dogs other healthy treats that are specially made for them.
