Strawberry chips

A representation of Strawberry chips

Strawberry chips are dried strawberry slices that you can use as a healthy snack or as an ingredient for muesli, jam or cake. They are easy to make yourself and keep for a long time. But are they also suitable for dogs? Find out everything you need to know about strawberry chips for dogs in this article.

What are strawberry chips?

Strawberry chips are nothing more than strawberries cut into thin slices and dried at a low temperature in the oven or dehydrator. This causes them to lose water and become crispy. However, they retain their color, aroma and vitamins. Strawberry chips are a tasty alternative to fresh strawberries, which you don't always have to hand or which spoil quickly.

Are strawberry chips healthy for dogs?

Strawberries are generally healthy for dogs as long as they are fed in moderation. They contain lots of vitamin C, folic acid, potassium and fiber. They can strengthen the immune system, aid digestion and clean teeth. They also have a low glycemic index, which means that they do not cause a sharp rise in blood sugar levels.

Strawberry chips have the same benefits as fresh strawberries, but they are more concentrated and contain less water. This means that you should give your dog fewer strawberry chips than fresh strawberries to avoid overdosing. Too much sugar can lead to obesity, diabetes or tooth decay.

How can you make strawberry chips for dogs yourself?

Making your own strawberry chips for dogs is very easy. All you need is fresh strawberries and a baking tray or dehydrator. Here are the instructions:

  • Wash the strawberries and remove the green.
  • Cut the strawberries into thin slices (approx. 2 mm) with a sharp knife.
  • Place the strawberry slices on a baking tray lined with baking paper or on the rack of a dehydrator.
  • Dry the strawberry slices in the oven or dehydrator at 50 degrees Celsius for about 5 hours. Turn them halfway through.
  • Leave the strawberry chips to cool and store them in an airtight jar or tin in a cool, dark place.

How much strawberry chips can you give your dog?

The amount of strawberry chips you can give your dog depends on its size, weight and health. As a rule of thumb, fruit should not make up more than 10 percent of your dog's daily calorie intake. This means that you can give a small dog (up to 10 kg) about one teaspoon, a medium-sized dog (10 to 25 kg) about one tablespoon and a large dog (over 25 kg) about two tablespoons of strawberry chips per day.

However, you should always pay attention to how your dog reacts to the strawberry chips. Some dogs may be sensitive to certain fruits or not tolerate them well. If you notice that your dog has diarrhea, vomiting or other symptoms, you should stop giving him strawberry chips.

Strawberry chips are a tasty and healthy treat for dogs that you can easily make yourself. They contain lots of vitamins and fiber and have a low glycemic index. However, you should make sure that you don't give your dog too many strawberry chips, as they contain a lot of sugar and can lead to health problems. You should also always monitor your dog's reaction to the strawberry chips.
