Stick cheese

A representation of Stick cheese

Stangenkäse is a sour milk cheese that originates from Germany and is typically shaped like a stick. It is very low in fat and has a spicy taste and a strong smell. It is often sprinkled with caraway seeds or coated with red smear. But is string cheese also suitable for dogs? In this article, you can find out more about the advantages and disadvantages of string cheese for your four-legged friend.

What is string cheese?

Stangenkäse is a type of sour milk cheese made from skimmed milk. The milk is mixed with lactic acid bacteria and curdled into a firm curd that is pressed into molds. The cheese sticks are then treated with brine and mature for several weeks to months. They develop a thin rind which, depending on the variety, is sprinkled with caraway seeds or other spices or coated with red smear.

Stangenkäse has a very low fat content of just 0.5 to 1 percent in the dry matter. It is rich in protein, calcium and phosphorus, but also in salt and purines. It has a strong taste and an intense smell, which some people and dogs like, but others do not.

What are the benefits of string cheese for dogs?

String cheese can have several benefits for dogs if it is fed in moderation. On the one hand, it can serve as a treat or reward if your dog likes it. On the other hand, it can promote dental health, as its firm consistency cleans and massages the teeth. It can also strengthen bones as it contains a lot of calcium.

What are the disadvantages of cheese sticks for dogs?

String cheese can also have some disadvantages for dogs if it is fed too often or too much. For one thing, it can lead to digestive problems as it contains a lot of lactose, which some dogs do not tolerate well. Secondly, it can contribute to obesity or kidney problems as it contains a lot of salt and purines, which can increase uric acid levels.

In addition, string cheese can lead to allergies or intolerances if your dog is sensitive to dairy products or certain spices. You should therefore always pay attention to how your dog reacts to string cheese and omit or reduce it if necessary.

How much string cheese can my dog eat?

The amount of string cheese your dog is allowed to eat depends on various factors, such as his weight, activity level, health and diet. As a general rule, however, string cheese should only be used as an occasional supplement and not as a staple food.

A rule of thumb is that your dog should not eat more than 10 to 20 grams of cheese sticks per day. This corresponds to about half to a whole cheese stick. You should also make sure that your dog drinks enough water to flush out the salt.

Stangenkäse is a sour milk cheese with a low fat content and a tangy flavor. It can have some benefits for dogs, such as promoting dental health or serving as a treat. However, it can also have some disadvantages, such as causing digestive problems, obesity or kidney problems or triggering allergies or intolerances. That's why you should only feed cheese sticks in moderation and always pay attention to your dog's reaction.
