A representation of Spruce

Spruce is a coniferous tree that can be found in many gardens and forests. The spruce belongs to the coniferous plant family and is not poisonous to humans or animals. On the contrary, the young shoots of the spruce are edible and have many health benefits for dogs. In this article you will find out what spruce is, how you can use it for your dog and what you should look out for.

What is spruce?

Spruce is an evergreen tree that can grow up to 50 meters high. The needles are dark green, pointed and stiff. The cones are elongated and hang from the branches. The bark is gray-brown and scaly.

The spruce is widespread in Europe, Asia and North America. It grows mainly in cool and damp areas. The spruce is an important source of wood and is also used as a Christmas tree.

How can spruce help dogs?

The young shoots of the spruce, which grow in spring, are very aromatic and rich in vital substances. They contain essential oils, vitamin C, resin and flavonoids. These ingredients have the following effects on dogs:

  • Strengthening the immune system: the essential oils of spruce have an antibacterial, antiviral and anti-inflammatory effect. They can help to fight infections of the respiratory tract, skin or digestive tract. The vitamin C supports the immune system and promotes wound healing.
  • Pain relief: The resins of the spruce have an analgesic and antispasmodic effect. They can help with joint pain, muscle tension or stomach cramps.
  • Improving mood: The flavonoids in spruce have an antioxidant effect and protect the cells from free radicals. They can also brighten the mood and reduce stress.

How can you use spruce for dogs?

There are several ways you can use spruce for your dog. Here are some examples:

  • Spruce tip salad: You can simply sprinkle the fresh shoots of spruce over a spring salad or mix them with some curd cheese. Your dog will love the fresh taste and absorb lots of vital nutrients at the same time.
  • Spruce tip liqueur: You can put the fresh spruce shoots in a jar and pour vodka or grain over them. Seal the jar and leave to infuse in a dark place for a few weeks. Then strain the liqueur and pour it into a bottle. You can give your dog a teaspoon every now and then to boost his immune system or relieve pain.
  • Spruce needle tea: You can boil the dried spruce needles in a pot of water and leave to infuse for about 10 minutes. Then strain the tea and leave to cool. You can offer your dog the tea as drinking water or pour it over his food. The tea has an expectorant and soothing effect on the respiratory tract.
  • Spruce needle bath: You can hang the dried spruce needles in a cotton bag in the bathtub or sprinkle them into the water. Then let your dog bathe in it. The bath has a relaxing effect on the muscles and skin.

What should you look out for with spruce?

Although spruce has many positive properties, there are a few things to consider before using it for your dog:

  • Allergies: some dogs can have allergic reactions to the essential oils in spruce. Therefore, you should always try a small amount first and observe how your dog reacts to it. If you notice any signs of itching, rash or difficulty breathing, you should stop using it immediately and consult a vet.
  • Dosage: The essential oils of spruce are very concentrated and can lead to symptoms of poisoning if overdosed. You should therefore only ever use small amounts and not repeat the application too often. The recommended dosage for dogs is around one teaspoon per 10 kilograms of body weight per day.
  • Quality: The quality of spruce can vary depending on its origin, harvest time and storage. You should therefore only use spruce from organic cultivation or from uncontaminated areas. You should also make sure that the spruce is fresh or properly dried. Mold or contamination can impair the effect or be harmful.

Spruce is a healthy and aromatic ingredient for dogs that has many benefits for the immune system, pain relief and mood. You can use spruce in various forms for your dog, for example as a salad, liqueur, tea or bath. However, you should always pay attention to the quality, dosage and possible allergies in order to offer your dog only the best.
