Sesame meal

A representation of Sesame meal

Sesame meal is a by-product of sesame oil production. The sesame seeds are pressed and the oil separated. The remaining solid residue is called meal. Sesame meal still contains around 10 to 15 percent oil and has a high content of protein, fiber, minerals and vitamins.

Sesame meal can be used as a feed supplement for dogs to improve the supply of nutrients and aid digestion. Sesame meal is particularly rich in calcium, magnesium, iron, zinc, copper, selenium and vitamin E. These substances are important for bone formation, the immune system, blood formation, skin and coat health and cell protection.

Benefits of sesame meal for dogs

  • Sesame meal can improve feed conversion as it has a positive effect on the intestinal flora and activates the digestive enzymes.
  • Sesame meal can increase the feeling of satiety as it binds a lot of water and swells. This can help to reduce the weight of overweight dogs.
  • Sesame meal can improve coat quality as it contains essential fatty acids and vitamin E, which ensure a shiny and healthy coat.
  • Sesame meal can strengthen the immune system as it contains antioxidants such as selenium and vitamin E, which neutralize free radicals and prevent cell damage.

Disadvantages of sesame meal for dogs

  • Sesame meal can trigger allergies if the dog has an intolerance to sesame or other plants from the labiate family. Typical symptoms are itching, skin rash, diarrhea or vomiting.
  • Sesame meal can lead to flatulence if the dog is not used to it or gets too much of it. This is due to the fiber it contains, which is fermented by the intestinal bacteria. Slow acclimatization and a moderate dosage can prevent this.
  • Sesame meal can impair the absorption of other nutrients if it is fed in excessive quantities. This is due to the phytic acids it contains, which bind minerals such as iron or zinc and reduce their availability. A balanced diet with other feed components can counteract this.

Sesame meal is a valuable food supplement for dogs that offers many health benefits. However, attention should be paid to possible intolerances and the quantity should be adjusted to avoid side effects. Sesame meal should not be used as a complete food, but as a supplement to a varied diet with other high-quality ingredients.
