Fishmeal is a feed additive consisting of dried and ground fish or fish parts. It is often used as a source of protein for pigs and chickens, but can also be beneficial for dogs.

Benefits of fish meal for dogs

  • Fish meal contains important omega-3 fatty acids, which are good for the dog's skin, coat and immune system.
  • Fish meal can also provide vitamin K1, which is important for blood clotting and bone metabolism.
  • Fish meal has an intense smell and taste that appeals to many dogs and makes it palatable for them to eat.

Disadvantages of fish meal for dogs

  • Fish meal can contain harmful substances such as heavy metals or dioxins, which can accumulate in your dog's body. Therefore, only high-quality fish meal from controlled sources should be purchased.
  • Fishmeal can cause allergies or intolerances in some dogs. If your dog is sensitive to fish or has a food allergy, you should be careful when using fishmeal.
  • Fish meal is an exotic product that has been transported over long distances. This pollutes the environment and increases CO2 emissions. The production of fishmeal can also have a negative impact on marine ecosystems.

How much fishmeal should my dog get?

The optimal amount of fishmeal depends on various factors such as the dog's age, weight and state of health. In general, however, less is more. Too much protein can lead to digestive problems or kidney damage. In addition, the dog should not be dependent on a single source of protein.

If you mix some fish meal into your dog's food from time to time or bake him homemade dog cookies with some coconut or algae powder, you can do him some good. However, always make sure you use high-quality products that are free from harmful substances.
