Saint-André

A representation of Saint-André

Saint-André is a French soft cheese from Normandy, named after the town of Saint-André-sur-Orne. It is one of the so-called triple cream cheeses, which means that it has a very high fat content of 75% in the dry matter. This is because cream is added to the cheese during production. This makes it particularly creamy, melting and buttery in taste, with a slight hint of acidity.

Is Saint-André suitable for dogs?

Cheese is a favorite treat for many dogs, but not all cheeses are equally well tolerated by them. As a general rule, the more lactose (milk sugar) a cheese contains, the harder it is for dogs to digest. Lactose-intolerant dogs can get diarrhea, flatulence or vomiting from eating cheese. Too much fat can also lead to obesity or pancreatitis.

Saint-André is a very fatty and lactose-rich cheese, which should therefore only be fed to dogs in very small quantities and rarely. It is not a suitable food for dogs with lactose intolerance, food allergies or sensitive stomachs. Puppies should not be given Saint-André either, as their digestive system is not yet fully developed.

What are the benefits of Saint-André for dogs?

Despite its disadvantages, Saint-André also has some positive properties for dogs. It is a good source of calcium, which is important for strong bones and teeth. It also contains protein, which is necessary for muscle building and cell regeneration. It can also be used as a reward or motivation during training, as it has an intense smell and taste that appeals to many dogs.

How can Saint-André be fed to dogs?

If you want to give your dog some Saint-André from time to time, you should follow a few rules:

  • Only give small amounts (maximum 10 grams per day)
  • Cut or crumble the cheese into small pieces
  • Serve the cheese at room temperature
  • Do not combine the cheese with other fatty or lactose-rich foods
  • Let the dog drink plenty of water after eating cheese
  • Monitor the dog for possible digestive problems

Saint-André is a delicious cheese for humans, but not necessarily for dogs. It has a very high fat and lactose content, which can lead to health problems in dogs. It should therefore only be given as an occasional treat in small quantities. There are other cheeses that are more suitable for dogs, such as Harz cheese or goat's cheese.
