Rosehip peel is the dried and ground peel of the rose hip, the fruit of the wild rose. Rosehip peel is a popular natural remedy and dietary supplement for dogs as it offers many health benefits. In this article you will find out what rosehip peel is, how it works and what you should bear in mind when feeding it to your dog.

What is rosehip peel?

Rosehip peel powder is a fine powder obtained from the peel of rose hips. After harvesting, the peels are dried and ground into powder. This removes the seeds and hairs, which are indigestible for dogs and can lead to gastrointestinal problems.

Rosehip peel contains many valuable ingredients, especially vitamin C. The vitamin C content of rosehip peel is very high and exceeds that of oranges and lemons many times over. Vitamin C is important for the immune system, wound healing, collagen formation and iron absorption. Rosehip peel also contains other vitamins (A, B1, B2), minerals (calcium, iron, magnesium), fiber, pectin, flavonoids and galactolipids.

How does rosehip peel work?

Rosehip peel has a number of positive effects on the health of dogs. The most important are

  • Anti-inflammatory: Rosehip peel can help with inflammatory conditions such as osteoarthritis, rheumatism or skin problems by inhibiting the formation of inflammatory messengers and relieving pain. Studies have shown that rosehip peel improves joint mobility and reduces the need for painkillers.
  • Immune-boosting: Rosehip peel can strengthen the immune system and protect against infections by activating immune cells and promoting the formation of antibodies. Rosehip peel can also help with colds, fever and allergies.
  • Digestive: Rosehip peel can aid digestion and help with constipation or diarrhea by regulating the intestinal flora and stimulating bowel movements. Rosehip peel can also alleviate stomach complaints and protect against stomach ulcers.
  • Metabolism-regulating: Rosehip peel can stimulate the metabolism and help with obesity, diabetes or high blood pressure, as it lowers blood sugar and cholesterol levels and promotes blood circulation. Rosehip peel can also improve kidney function and have a diuretic effect.

How can rosehip peel be fed?

Rosehip peel can be fed as a powder or puree. The powder can simply be mixed into the feed or mixed with a little water. The puree can be given as a reward or also mixed into the food.

The dosage of rosehip peel depends on the weight of the dog. A general recommendation is

  • Small dogs up to 10 kg: up to 15 ml or one tablespoon per day
  • Medium to large dogs up to 30 kg: up to two tablespoons per day
  • Large dogs over 30 kg: about one tablespoon per 15 kg body weight daily

Rosehip peel powder is made from the dried peel of rose hips and contains many valuable ingredients, especially vitamin C. It offers several health benefits for dogs, such as anti-inflammatory, immune-boosting, digestive and metabolism-regulating effects. The dosage depends on the dog's weight and can be administered as a powder or puree.
