Romadur is a soft cheese with red smear made from cow's milk, which originally comes from Belgium but is now mainly produced in Bavaria. It has a strong smell and a mild to piquant taste, depending on the degree of ripeness. It is available in stick form and has a fat content of 20, 40 or 60 percent in dry matter. But is Romadur also suitable for dogs? In this article, you can find out more about the advantages and disadvantages of this type of cheese for your four-legged friend.

What is Romadur?

Romadur is a soft cheese made from pasteurized or raw cow's milk. The milk is curdled with an acid whey and rennet, and the resulting curd is filled into molds. After salting, the cheese is matured at 14 °C and high humidity for 8 to 14 days. During this time, it is lubricated with liquids containing red smear bacteria, mainly Brevibacterium linens. These bacteria give the cheese its orange to red-brown color and tangy aroma.

What are the benefits of Romadur for dogs?

Romadur can have several health benefits for dogs if it is fed in moderation. Firstly, it contains a lot of calcium, which is important for bones and teeth. Secondly, it also provides protein, which is needed for muscle building and cell regeneration. Romadur can also support the intestinal flora, as it contains lactic acid bacteria that can aid digestion.

What are the disadvantages of Romadur for dogs?

However, Romadur also has some disadvantages for dogs that should be taken into account. Firstly, it is very high in fat, which can lead to obesity and cardiovascular problems if it is fed too often or in too large quantities. Secondly, it can also contain lactose, which some dogs do not tolerate well and can lead to flatulence or diarrhea. Romadur can also contain salt, which can increase blood pressure and put a strain on the kidneys.

Romadur is a tasty cheese that can be suitable for dogs in small amounts and as an occasional treat. It can have some health benefits, such as calcium, protein and lactic acid bacteria. However, it should not be fed too often or in too large quantities, as it can also contain a lot of fat, lactose and salt, which can lead to health problems. In addition, you should always pay attention to how your dog reacts to the cheese and stop feeding it immediately if there are any signs of intolerance or allergy.
