Ricotta

A representation of Ricotta

Ricotta is an Italian cream cheese made from whey. It has a mild taste and a creamy consistency. Ricotta is often used in the kitchen, for example for lasagne, cannelloni or cakes. But is ricotta also suitable for dogs? In this article, you will find out what you should bear in mind if you want to give your dog ricotta.

Benefits of ricotta cheese for dogs

Ricotta is non-toxic to dogs and can be used in small amounts as a treat or to administer medication. Ricotta contains a lot of protein, which is important for muscle building and cell regeneration. Ricotta also provides minerals such as calcium and selenium as well as vitamin A, which are good for the bones, immune system and eyes.

Disadvantages of ricotta for dogs

However, ricotta is not a suitable staple food for dogs, as it also has some disadvantages. Firstly, ricotta contains lactose, which can cause digestive problems such as diarrhea or flatulence in some dogs. Secondly, ricotta is very high in fat and can contribute to obesity and associated diseases such as diabetes or heart problems if eaten too often.

How much ricotta can my dog eat?

If you want to treat your dog to some ricotta from time to time, you should adjust the amount according to his size, age and state of health. Your vet can help you set a safe guideline for your dog. As a rule of thumb, no more than 10 percent of your dog's daily calorie intake should come from snacks. This means, for example, that a 10-kilogram dog should eat no more than 20 grams of ricotta per day.

Ricotta is a delicious cheese that is also edible for dogs in moderation. It has some health benefits, but also some risks. You should therefore only give your dog small amounts as a treat and pay attention to his tolerance.
