Redfish

A representation of Redfish

Redfish is a popular type of fish that offers many health benefits not only for humans, but also for dogs. In this article, you will find out what redfish is, how you can feed it to your dog and what you should look out for.

What is redfish?

Redfish is a sea fish that is mainly found in the North Atlantic. It belongs to the scorpionfish family and has a reddish coloration, which gives it its name. Redfish has a firm, white flesh with a mild taste. It is rich in protein, omega-3 fatty acids, vitamins and minerals.

Why is redfish good for dogs?

Redfish can have many benefits as part of a balanced diet for dogs. Fish is generally a high-quality source of protein that is easily digested and offers many valuable benefits for the dog's body. The omega-3 fatty acids in redfish have an anti-inflammatory effect, particularly in the case of allergies, arthritis, skin problems or heart disease. They lower blood lipids and strengthen the heart. They also support brain and eye function and the immune system.

Redfish also contains important vitamins such as A, B2, B3, B12 and D as well as minerals and trace elements such as iron, potassium, magnesium, sodium, phosphorus and selenium. Sea fish also contain a lot of natural iodine, which is particularly important for very active dogs.

How do you feed redfish to dogs?

Redfish can be fed to dogs raw or cooked. However, it should be frozen raw beforehand to kill off any parasites. You should also make sure that the fish does not contain any bones that could injure the dog or be swallowed.

Redfish can be offered as a main meal or as a snack between meals. The amount should be adapted to the dog's requirements and not too much fish should be fed. As a rule of thumb, around 10 to 15 percent of a dog's daily energy requirement can be covered by fish.

Are there any disadvantages or risks when feeding redfish?

Redfish is considered a relatively safe type of fish for dogs. It does not contain a thiaminase enzyme, which breaks down vitamin B1 and renders it unusable for the body. This enzyme is found in many other fish and can lead to a vitamin B1 deficiency if consumed too frequently.

Redfish is also not particularly contaminated with heavy metals, as it is rather short-lived and feeds on small animals. Nevertheless, you should make sure that the fish comes from a clean source and does not contain any harmful substances.

As with any food, redfish can also cause intolerances or allergies. You should therefore always start feeding it slowly and observe your dog's reaction.

Redfish is a healthy fish for dogs that provides many nutrients and promotes well-being. It can be fed raw or cooked and is a good alternative to meat. However, you should pay attention to the quality of the fish and adjust the quantity to the dog's requirements.
