Real bearberry

A representation of Real bearberry

Bearberry (Arctostaphylos uva-ursi) is a plant from the heather family that grows mainly at higher altitudes. It has evergreen leaves and small white or pink flowers that appear in spring. The red berries are edible but very bitter and are often eaten by bears - hence the name.

But what does bearberry have to do with dogs? The answer lies in the leaves of the plant, which have been used as a remedy for centuries. The leaves contain a high proportion of arbutin, a substance that is converted to hydroquinone in the body. Hydroquinone has an antibacterial and anti-inflammatory effect and can help with urinary tract infections.

Benefits of bearberry for dogs

If your dog suffers from a bladder infection or has frequent problems with the urinary tract, bearberry can be a natural alternative to antibiotics. The plant can be prepared as a tea or administered as a finished preparation in the form of tablets or drops. The dosage depends on the dog's weight and should always be discussed with a vet.

Bearberry can not only alleviate acute symptoms, but also have a preventative effect. It can inhibit the growth of bacteria and lower the pH value of the urine, which reduces the risk of re-infection.

Disadvantages of bearberry for dogs

However, bearberry is not a miracle cure and should not be used without consulting a vet. There are some disadvantages and side effects that should be taken into account:

  • Bearberry should not be used on pregnant or lactating bitches as it can have a labor inducing effect.
  • Bearberry must not be used in cases of renal insufficiency or liver disease, as it may aggravate these conditions.
  • Bearberry must not be used over a longer period of time (more than four weeks), as it can cause irritation of the mucous membranes.
  • Bearberry must not be administered together with other medications that affect the pH value of the urine (e.g. vitamin C), as otherwise the effect will be lost or intensified.
  • Bearberry can trigger allergic reactions (e.g. skin rash or itching) in some dogs.

Bearberry is a medicinal plant with a long tradition and proven effect on urinary tract infections. It can help your dog if he suffers from such complaints or if you want to prevent them.

Bearberry is not a panacea and does not replace veterinary treatment.
