Potato starch

A representation of Potato starch

Potato starch is a fine white powder obtained from the tubers of the potato plant. It is often used as a thickener or binding agent in the kitchen, for example for sauces or puddings. But can potato starch also be used for dog cookies or treats? And what are the advantages and disadvantages of potato starch for dogs?

What are the benefits of potato starch for dogs?

Potato starch has several benefits for dogs that you should be aware of:

  • Potato starch is gluten-free and therefore suitable for dogs with a grain allergy or intolerance.
  • Potato starch contains proteins, vitamins and minerals that are important for your dog's health.
  • Potato starch can help regulate your dog's blood sugar levels as it is digested slowly and does not cause large fluctuations.

What are the disadvantages of potato starch for dogs?

Potato starch also has some disadvantages for dogs that you shouldn't ignore:

  • Potato starch has a high starch content and can therefore be fattening if you give your dog too much of it. So pay attention to the amount and calorie intake of your dog.
  • Potato starch can cause digestive problems in some dogs, such as bloating or diarrhea. This is because some dogs cannot tolerate or break down starch well.
  • Potato starch can contain traces of solanine, a toxic substance found in the skin of raw potatoes. Solanine is harmful to your dog in high quantities and can lead to symptoms such as vomiting or convulsions. Therefore, only buy high-quality potato starch without peel residues.

Potato starch is not a harmful food for your dog as long as you use it in moderation. It can be a good alternative to cereal flour if your dog has an allergy or intolerance. However, you should make sure that your dog does not have a hypersensitivity to starch and that you do not feed him raw or green potatoes.
