Plant protection products

A representation of Plant protection products

Plant protection products are products that are intended to protect plants or plant products from pests or diseases. They are mainly used in agriculture, but also in gardens, parks or on sports fields. Plant protection products can contain chemical or biological active ingredients, which can have different effects on the environment and health depending on the type and dosage.

How do pesticides affect dogs?

Dogs often come into contact with pesticides when they walk, sniff or eat in fields, meadows or lawns. They can absorb the products through their skin, respiratory tract or gastrointestinal tract. The consequences can vary depending on the type and quantity of the active ingredient: from mild irritation of the skin or mucous membranes to nausea, vomiting or diarrhea to severe poisoning with convulsions, paralysis or organ failure. Long-term damage such as cancer or hormonal disorders are also possible.

How can dogs be protected from pesticides?

To protect dogs from pesticides, you should take a few precautions:

  • Find out about the use of pesticides in your area. Pay attention to signs or warning symbols on the packaging.
  • Avoid walking or playing with your dog on freshly sprayed areas. Adhere to the prescribed waiting times until the products have broken down.
  • Wash your dog thoroughly after a walk if it has been in contact with pesticides, especially its paws and coat.
  • Observe your dog for possible symptoms of poisoning.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of pesticides?

Plant protection products have both advantages and disadvantages for agriculture and the environment. The advantages include:

  • They increase the yield and quality of crops.
  • They prevent crop failures and food shortages.
  • They reduce the need for other resources such as water or fertilizer.

The disadvantages include:

  • They can have negative effects on human and animal health.
  • They can disrupt biodiversity and the ecological balance.
  • They can lead to the development of resistance to pests or diseases.

Pesticides are useful products for agriculture, but they can also pose risks to the environment and health. Dog owners should therefore inform themselves about the use of pesticides and protect their dogs from possible contact.
