Phosphoric acid

A representation of Phosphoric acid

Phosphoric acid is a chemical compound of phosphorus and oxygen that is found in many foods and drinks. It is often used as an acidifier or preservative. But how does phosphoric acid affect your dog? Is it harmful or beneficial? In this article, you'll find out more about the role of phosphoric acid in dog food and what you should look out for.

The function of phosphorus in the dog's body

Phosphorus is a vital mineral for dogs. It is ingested with food and is used in the body for countless functions. For example, it is involved in the formation of bones, teeth, cell membranes and DNA. It also plays a role in energy production, acid-base balance and nerve function.

In the body, almost all phosphorus is combined with oxygen to form phosphate. Unneeded phosphate is excreted via the kidneys in healthy dogs.

The benefits of phosphoric acid in dog food

Phosphoric acid can have a number of benefits for dog food. On the one hand, it can improve the taste by enhancing the sweetness or fruit flavor. Secondly, it can inhibit the growth of bacteria and thus extend the shelf life.

Phosphoric acid can also help to ensure that the feed has an optimal calcium-phosphorus ratio. This ratio is important for the health of your dog's bones and teeth. It should be between 1:1 and 2:1. An increased intake of calcium removes phosphorus from the body. Too much phosphorus prevents the body from absorbing calcium.

The disadvantages of phosphoric acid in dog food

However, phosphoric acid also has some disadvantages for dog food. On the one hand, it can lead to hyperacidity of the stomach, which can cause digestive problems such as heartburn or diarrhea. Secondly, it can cause damage to the mucous membrane or tooth enamel if overdosed.

Dogs with kidney problems in particular should pay attention to the phosphorus content of their food. This is because a high phosphorus intake can further worsen kidney function and lead to an increase in blood pressure. Dogs with kidney problems should therefore be fed a special diet that is low in phosphorus.

How much phosphoric acid is allowed in dog food?

There is no precise information on how much phosphoric acid is allowed in dog food. However, the European Union has set limits for the total content of phosphate-containing additives. These are 5 grams per kilogram of dry food or 0.5 grams per kilogram of wet food.

To find out how much phosphoric acid is contained in a particular food, you can look at the label. There you will usually find the total content of crude ash or crude minerals as well as the proportion of calcium and phosphorus.
