Perch is a freshwater fish that is a predatory fish. It is found in many temperate waters, for example in Central Europe and the USA. It can grow up to 1.30 meters long and weigh 2.5 kilograms. Perch has a mild fish taste and many bones, which must be removed before consumption.

What is perch?

Perch is a family of fish from the perch order. There are over 220 species of perch, 14 of which live in temperate Eurasia and more than 200 in North America east of the Rocky Mountains. The best known species are the perch, the ruffe, the walleye and the nerd.

Perch have a laterally compressed body with conspicuous stripes and spiny rays. They have two clearly separated dorsal fins, the first supported by spiny rays, the second by soft rays. The anal fin usually has two spiny rays.

Perch feed mainly on other fish, aquatic insects, worms, crustaceans and fish spawn. They are relatively tolerant of water conditions and can also be found in brackish water.
