You may have heard of Ortosiphon, a tropical plant also known as cat's whiskers or Java tea. But did you know that Ortosiphon can also be healthy for dogs? In this article, you can find out more about this plant and its effects on your four-legged friend.

What is Ortosiphon?

Ortosiphon is a plant from the labiate family that is native to Southeast Asia and Australia. It has white or purple flowers that resemble a beard and elongated leaves. The leaves and flowers are dried and used as a tea or extract. Ortosiphon has a diuretic, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effect. It is mainly used for kidney and bladder problems, but also for rheumatism, gout and diabetes.

How does Ortosiphon affect dogs?

Ortosiphon can also help dogs suffering from kidney or bladder stones. The diuretic effect flushes out the stones and cleanses the urinary tract. Ortosiphon can also relieve inflammation in the kidneys or bladder and support kidney function. Ortosiphon can also help dogs with obesity or diabetes, as it stimulates the metabolism and lowers blood sugar levels. It also protects the cells from free radicals and strengthens the immune system.

How is Ortosiphon given to dogs?

Ortosiphon can be given to dogs as a tea or as a finished preparation (e.g. tablets or drops). The dosage depends on the size and weight of the dog. As a guide: 1 teaspoon of dried leaves per 250 ml of water for a 10 kg dog. The tea should be cooled and given throughout the day. The ready-to-use preparations should be dosed according to the manufacturer's instructions. Ortosiphon should not be given for more than four weeks at a time, otherwise it can overload the kidneys.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of Ortosiphon for dogs?

Ortosiphon has many benefits for dogs with kidney or bladder problems, obesity or diabetes. It can relieve discomfort, promote elimination and improve health. Ortosiphon is a natural remedy that is generally well tolerated. However, Ortosiphon also has some disadvantages. It can cause gastrointestinal discomfort in some dogs, such as diarrhea or vomiting. It can also lower blood pressure, which can be problematic in dogs with heart problems. It can also influence the effect of other medications, such as blood-thinning or blood sugar-lowering drugs. Therefore, you should always consult a vet before giving Ortosiphon to your dog.
