What is chlorella?

Chlorella is a freshwater microalgae that is one of the oldest living organisms on earth. It has a high content of chlorophyll, the green pigment in plants that is responsible for photosynthesis. Chlorella also contains many vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, amino acids and fatty acids that are important for human and animal health.

What are the benefits of chlorella for dogs?

Chlorella can help your dog in various ways:

  • It can aid digestion by supporting intestinal flora and binding and eliminating toxins from the body.
  • It can strengthen the immune system by stimulating the formation of white blood cells and inhibiting inflammation.
  • It can improve skin and coat health by promoting cell regeneration and soothing skin irritations.
  • It can support joint health by promoting cartilage formation and preventing osteoarthritis.
  • It can protect cardiovascular health by lowering blood pressure and regulating cholesterol levels.

What are the side effects of chlorella in dogs?

Chlorella is generally well tolerated and has few side effects. However, there are a few points to bear in mind before giving your dog chlorella:

  • Chlorella can trigger allergic reactions, especially in dogs with a grass allergy. Therefore, watch out for possible symptoms such as itching, rash or shortness of breath and stop feeding if you notice them.
  • Chlorella can influence the effect of medication, especially blood thinners or thyroid hormones. Therefore, talk to your vet before giving your dog chlorella if he is taking such medication.
  • Chlorella can cause digestive problems, especially if the dosage is too high or given too quickly. Therefore, start with a small amount and increase it slowly. Also give your dog enough water.

How do I feed chlorella to dogs?

Chlorella is available in various forms, for example as a powder, tablets or capsules. You can give chlorella directly into your dog's mouth or mix it into their food. The recommended dosage depends on the size and weight of your dog. As a rule of thumb: 1 gram of chlorella per 10 kilograms of body weight per day. This amount can be divided into two portions.

Chlorella is a nutrient-rich microalgae that can have many health benefits for your dog. However, you should find out beforehand whether your dog can tolerate chlorella and how to dose it correctly.
