Nougat is a delicious sweet made from chocolate and hazelnuts. Many people love nougat and enjoy snacking on it. But what about dogs? Can they also eat nougat? And what exactly is nougat? In this article, you'll find out everything you need to know about nougat in relation to dogs.

What is nougat?

Nougat is a confectionery made from chocolate and hazelnuts. The hazelnuts are roasted and ground until they release a fine oil. They are then mixed with powdered sugar and melted dark chocolate coating. The mixture is then poured into molds or formed into bars. Nougat has an intense taste of hazelnuts and cocoa and is very creamy.

Nougat has its origins in Italy, where it is known as gianduia. It originated in the 19th century as a result of high customs duties on cocoa imposed during the Napoleonic era. The chocolate makers in Turin added hazelnuts, which were grown in the region, to their chocolate. The result was a new specialty that soon became popular.

Today, there are many different types of nougat, for example with almonds, brittle, cream or other flavors. Nougat is often used as a filling for pralines or chocolate or is offered as a spread.

Disadvantages of nougat

Nougat has some disadvantages, especially for dogs. Chocolate contains theobromine, a substance that is toxic to dogs. Theobromine affects the nervous and cardiovascular systems of dogs and can lead to vomiting, diarrhea, convulsions, tachycardia or even death. The darker the chocolate, the more theobromine it contains. Dark chocolate has a high theobromine content and is therefore particularly dangerous for dogs.

Hazelnuts can also cause problems if they are eaten in large quantities. They can lead to stomach upsets or intestinal blockages. They can also trigger allergies or contribute to weight gain.

Nougat is therefore not a suitable food for dogs and should be avoided.
