What is Mexican chia?

Mexican chia is a plant from the labiate family, which also includes sage. It originates from Mexico and Guatemala and was already used by the Aztecs as a food and remedy. The small seeds of the plant are rich in omega-3 fatty acids, fiber, protein, antioxidants, minerals and vitamins.

What are the benefits of Mexican chia for dogs?

Mexican chia can provide many health benefits for your dog. For example, it can:

  • aid digestion, as it binds and swells a lot of water
  • strengthen the immune system as it has an anti-inflammatory effect
  • make the coat shiny and alleviate skin problems as it contains essential fatty acids
  • regulate blood sugar levels and prevent diabetes as it contains slowly digestible carbohydrates
  • Control weight and help prevent obesity as it has a satiating effect

What are the disadvantages of Mexican chia for dogs?

Although Mexican chia is a natural product, it is not without risks. For example, it can:

  • Trigger allergies or intolerances in sensitive dogs
  • cause gastrointestinal complaints if the dosage is too high or the dog gets used to it too quickly
  • have interactions with medications with blood-thinning or blood sugar-lowering agents

How do you feed Mexican Chia to dogs?

If you want to give your dog Mexican chia, there are a few things you should bear in mind. For example, you should:

  • only ever buy high-quality organic chia seeds without additives or harmful substances
  • only ever feed small amounts, about one teaspoon per 10 kg of body weight per day
  • always soak the seeds in water or other liquids such as broth or yoghurt beforehand
  • always start slowly with a smaller amount and observe how your dog reacts
  • always ask your vet for advice if your dog has health problems or is taking medication

Mexican chia is an interesting ingredient for dogs with many positive properties. It can support your dog's health and give it more vitality. However, you should inform yourself well in advance about the correct use and dosage of Mexican chia for dogs. And of course you should not forget that a balanced diet needs more than just one ingredient.
