Medlar

A representation of Medlar

The medlar is an old type of fruit that was already known in the Middle Ages. It belongs to the rose family and grows on a deciduous tree with a crooked trunk and broad crown. The fruits are brown, round and have a diameter of around three to five centimeters. They look like small apples with a star-shaped hole at the top. The medlar is also known as the common medlar or stone apple.

What makes the medlar so special?

The medlar has a sweet and sour taste and a soft consistency. It contains lots of vitamins, minerals and fiber. It also has a high content of tannins, which can have an anti-inflammatory and antibacterial effect. Medlars can therefore help with gastrointestinal complaints or skin problems.

Can medlars be fed to dogs?

Yes, dogs can eat medlars. However, there are a few things to bear in mind:

  • The fruit must be ripe. This can be recognized by the fact that they become soft and develop brown spots. Unripe medlars are very hard and sour and can cause stomach ache.
  • The seeds should be removed. They contain hydrocyanic acid, which is poisonous to dogs.
  • The quantity must be limited. Too many medlars can lead to diarrhea or vomiting.
  • Pay attention to quality. Only use fresh and untreated fruit.

How are medlars fed to dogs?

Medlars can be given as a snack between meals or as a supplement to food. They can be fed raw or cooked. They can also be processed into puree or compote or mixed with other fruits.

Medlars are a healthy treat for dogs with many benefits. However, they should only be fed in moderation and should always be offered without seeds.
