You may know Teltower Rübchen as a regional specialty from Brandenburg that is particularly popular in winter. But did you know that you can also feed this small and aromatic turnip to your dog? In this article, you can find out more about Teltower Rübchen and its advantages and disadvantages for your four-legged friend.

What are Teltow turnips?

TeltowerRübchen are a special type of turnip. They are named after Teltow, the landscape in Brandenburg from which they originate. They are also known as small turnip, Märkische Rübe or Mairübe Petrowski. The May, autumn, stubble and Bavarian turnip are also very closely related.

Teltow turnips have a round to oval shape and a white to yellowish skin with a red edge. They are about 3 to 5 cm in size and weigh between 20 and 50 g. Their flesh is firm and has a sweet, nutty flavor.

Teltow turnips have been cultivated since the 18th century and were once an important food for humans and animals. Today, they are mainly cultivated by hobby gardeners or sold at regional markets. They are considered a delicacy among root vegetables and are often eaten raw as a salad or cooked as a side dish.

Why are Teltow turnips good for your dog?

Teltow turnips contain many valuable nutrients for your dog. They are rich in vitamin C, B vitamins, potassium, calcium, magnesium, iron and fiber. These can strengthen the immune system, aid digestion, support the bones and improve the blood count.

Teltow turnips also have a low calorie content (approx. 25 kcal per 100 g) and a high water content (approx. 90 %). This makes them an ideal ingredient for dogs with obesity or diabetes.

Teltow turnips can be fed raw or cooked. Raw, they taste crunchy and juicy. Cooked, they are softer and milder. You can feed them to your dog whole or cut into pieces or mix them with other vegetables.

What do you need to bear in mind when feeding Teltow turnips to your dog?

As with any new food, you should introduce Teltower Rübchen to your dog slowly. Start with small amounts (e.g. one teaspoon per day) and observe your dog's reaction. Some dogs tolerate Teltower Rübchen better than others.

Too much Teltower Rübchen can lead to flatulence or diarrhea. Therefore, you should not replace more than 10 % of the daily food with Teltower Rübchen.

You should also make sure that the turnips are fresh and unsprayed. Wash them thoroughly or peel them before feeding.

Teltow turnips are a healthy and tasty ingredient for your dog. They contain many important nutrients and have a low calorie content.
