Magnesium hydroxide
Benefits of magnesium hydroxide for dogs
Magnesium hydroxide can be used for dogs suffering from stomach problems such as heartburn, gastritis or stomach ulcers. It can relieve pain and promote healing. Magnesium hydroxide can also help dogs suffering from constipation or fecal buildup in the colon. It can soften the stool and facilitate bowel evacuation.
Disadvantages of magnesium hydroxide for dogs
Magnesium hydroxide is not without side effects. It can cause diarrhea, abdominal cramps, bloating or vomiting. It can also disturb the electrolyte balance in the body and lead to a lack of calcium, phosphate or potassium. Magnesium hydroxide can also impair the absorption of other medications if it is administered at the same time. Therefore, a time interval of at least two hours should always be observed.
Magnesium hydroxide should not be overdosed or used for too long, as this can lead to intoxication. The symptoms of magnesium poisoning are lethargy, muscle weakness, shortness of breath or cardiac arrest. Magnesium acts as an antagonist of calcium on the nerve and muscle cells and can therefore inhibit excitability.
Dosage and use of magnesium hydroxide for dogs
The dosage of magnesium hydroxide depends on the weight of the dog and the reason for use. As an antacid, it is recommended to administer 10 to 20 mg per kilogram of body weight every four to five hours, preferably one hour after feeding. As a laxative, it is recommended to administer 45 to 75 mg per kilogram of body weight.
Magnesium hydroxide is available in various forms, for example as tablets, capsules or suspension. The tablets should be crushed or chewed so that they dissolve better. The suspension should be shaken well before it is administered.
Magnesium hydroxide should always be used after consultation with the vet. He can determine the exact dosage and take into account possible interactions with other medications. He can also monitor whether the treatment is effective and whether there are any side effects.
Magnesium hydroxide is a useful active ingredient for dogs with stomach or intestinal problems. It can neutralize the acid in the stomach and stimulate intestinal activity. However, it should only be used under veterinary supervision as it can also have side effects. Overdosing or using it for too long can lead to magnesium poisoning, which can be life-threatening.
If you notice any signs of hypersensitivity or poisoning in your dog, you should see your vet immediately. We are not a substitute for a vet, but we try to be as accurate as possible. Every dog reacts differently and we recommend you get a second opinion or consult your vet if in doubt.
Stay healthy and take good care of your four-legged friend!😊
