What is loofah?

Luffa is a plant species from the gourd family. The fruits of the loofah plant are elongated, have a hard skin and contain many seeds. When the fruits are ripe, they are dried and peeled. The inside consists of a fibrous tissue that can be used as a sponge or cloth.

However, loofah also has medicinal properties. An oil is extracted from the seeds, which has an anti-inflammatory and analgesic effect. The sponge is used to make a homeopathic remedy called Luffa operculata, which is particularly helpful for respiratory problems.

How is Luffa used in dogs?

Luffa operculata is available as globules or drops in various strengths. The dosage depends on the size of the dog, the severity of the symptoms and the potency. A general recommendation is

5 globules or 5 drops per dose
3 x daily for acute complaints
1 x daily for chronic complaints
The globules or drops can be given directly into the mouth or dissolved in water. They should be administered at least 15 minutes before or after eating.

Treatment should be continued until there is an improvement. The dose can then be reduced or discontinued.
