Wasabi is a hot spice made from the rhizome of a plant from the cruciferous family. It is mainly used in Japanese cuisine, for example with sushi or sashimi. Wasabi has a green color and a sweetish note, but the spiciness quickly rises to the nose and throat. Wasabi has a number of health benefits that may be of interest to both humans and dogs. However, wasabi should only be fed to dogs in small quantities and with caution, as too much spiciness can also be harmful.

What is wasabi?

Wasabi (Eutrema japonicum) is a plant species that is native to Japan. It grows in marshy areas at the edge of watercourses and forms fleshy rhizomes that are used as a spice. The rhizomes are rubbed on a wooden board with shark skin to produce the green paste. Wasabi contains mustard oils, which are responsible for the pungency. However, these evaporate quickly due to oxidation, so wasabi should be prepared fresh and consumed quickly.

What are the benefits of wasabi for dogs?

Wasabi has a number of positive effects on dogs' health. The mustard oils have an antimicrobial effect and can inhibit or kill the growth of harmful bacteria, viruses, fungi and yeasts. This can be particularly helpful for infections of the upper respiratory tract or urinary tract. Wasabi also promotes digestion and stabilizes it. Wasabi is also said to stimulate the immune system and increase the number of immune cells. Wasabi is also said to detoxify the liver and have a purifying effect. Wasabi should not be used as a stimulant!

What are the disadvantages of wasabi for dogs?

Wasabi is a very hot spice that not every dog likes or likes. Too much spiciness can irritate the mucous membranes in the mouth, nose and throat. This can lead to sneezing, coughing, tearing or vomiting. Too much spiciness can also cause stomach problems such as heartburn, stomach pain or diarrhea. Wasabi should therefore only be fed to dogs in small quantities and diluted with water or yogurt. You should also make sure that the dog drinks enough water to flush out the spiciness.
