The flamingo flower is a popular houseplant that brings an exotic accent to the home with its bright flowers and glossy foliage. But many dog owners don't know this: The flamingo flower can be very dangerous for their four-legged friends. In this article, you will find out what the flamingo flower is, why it is poisonous and how you can keep it safe in your home.

What is the flamingo flower?

The flamingo flower (Anthurium) belongs to the arum family and originally comes from the tropical regions of South and Central America. It is also known as the bow flower or tail lily and comprises more than 1000 different species. The flamingo flower is characterized by its eye-catching flowers, which consist of a coloured bract (spatha) and a long flower base (spadix). The colors of the flowers range from white to pink to red and purple. The leaves of the flamingo flower are usually dark green, heart-shaped and shiny.

Why is the flamingo flower poisonous to dogs?

The flamingo flower contains so-called calcium oxalate crystals in all parts of the plant, which can cause irritation on contact with the mucous membranes or skin. If a dog nibbles on or eats the flamingo flower, the crystals can cause pain, swelling, redness, blistering or inflammation in the mouth, throat or gastrointestinal tract. They can also cause salivation, vomiting, diarrhea or loss of appetite. In severe cases, breathing difficulties, cramps or kidney failure may even occur.

How can you keep the flamingo flower safely indoors?

If you have a dog and still don't want to do without the flamingo flower, you should take some precautions to protect your pet. Here are some tips:

  • Place the flamingo flower in a place that your dog cannot reach, for example on a high chest of drawers or a shelf.
  • Regularly cut off the wilted flowers and leaves and dispose of them safely in the trash.
  • Make sure that no plant parts fall to the ground or can be pulled down.
  • Train your dog not to nibble or eat plants.
  • Observe your dog after contact with the flamingo flower and consult a vet immediately in the event of symptoms of poisoning.

The flamingo flower is a beautiful plant, but it can be very poisonous to dogs. If you want to keep it in your home, make sure that your dog does not have access to it and does not accidentally eat it. This way you can enjoy its beauty and protect your dog's health at the same time.
