What is hop tea?

Hop tea is made from the dried flowers of the hop plant (Humulus lupulus). Hops are a climbing plant that is primarily known as an ingredient in beer. The female inflorescences, also known as cones, contain various active ingredients such as bitter substances, flavonoids, tannins and essential oils.

How does hop tea work?

Hop tea has a calming and sleep-promoting effect on the nervous system. It can therefore help to relax your dog in the event of restlessness, anxiety or stress. Hop tea also aids digestion and relieves flatulence, cramps and nausea. It also has an anti-inflammatory and antibacterial effect and can be used to treat skin irritations or wounds.

How do you prepare hop tea?

To make hop tea, pour a teaspoon of hop flowers over a cup of hot water and leave the tea to infuse for ten minutes. Strain the hops and allow the tea to cool. You can offer your dog the tea pure or sweetened with a little honey. The dosage depends on the size and weight of your dog. As a guideline, you can give about 10 ml per kilogram of body weight per day.

What are the benefits of hop tea for dogs?

Hop tea can help your dog in various situations, for example

  • If he is nervous or anxious, for example during thunderstorms, New Year's Eve or visits to the vet
  • If he sleeps badly or suffers from nightmares
  • If he has digestive problems, for example after a change of food or a gastrointestinal infection
  • If he has skin problems, for example itching, eczema or wound healing

What are the disadvantages of hop tea for dogs?

Hop tea is not suitable for every dog. There are some risks and side effects that you should be aware of, for example

  • Hop tea can interfere with the effects of medications, especially those that affect the nervous system. If your dog is taking medication, you should speak to your vet before using hop tea.
  • Hop tea can cause drowsiness or dizziness in some dogs. You should therefore observe your dog's reaction and adjust the dosage if necessary.
  • Hop tea can trigger allergic reactions in some dogs. If you notice signs such as a skin rash, itching or difficulty breathing, you should stop the tea immediately and contact your vet.
  • Hop tea should not be given continuously as it can lead to habituation. You should therefore always take breaks and only use the tea when necessary.

Hop tea can be a useful natural remedy for dogs that can help with various ailments. However, you should always pay attention to the correct preparation, dosage and application and keep an eye on possible risks and side effects.
