Honey

A representation of Honey

Honey is not only a tasty and healthy food for humans, but also for dogs. In this article, you will find out what honey is, what benefits it has for your four-legged friend and what you should look out for when feeding it.

What is honey?

Honey is a natural product made by bees from the nectar of flowers or the honeydew of plants. The bees collect the nectar or honeydew, carry it in their honey stomachs to the beehive and pass it on to other bees, which process it. In the process, they add enzymes to the nectar or honeydew to make it more durable and sweeter. The finished honey is stored in honeycombs and sealed with wax.

Honey consists mainly of sugar, especially fructose and glucose, which provide quick energy. Honey also contains many vitamins, minerals, amino acids, antioxidants and other valuable ingredients that strengthen the immune system and promote health.

What are the benefits of honey for dogs?

Honey is also healthy for dogs. A teaspoon of honey every now and then, pure or mixed into the dog food, is also safe for your dog and can even protect against illnesses and accelerate their healing.

Honey has an antibacterial, antiviral and anti-inflammatory effect that can help with various ailments. For example, honey can be used to treat colds such as coughs, bronchitis or colds, as it soothes the mucous membranes and activates the immune system. Honey can also help with digestive problems such as diarrhea or gastritis, as it supports the intestinal flora and combats harmful bacteria.

Honey can not only be used internally, but also externally. Honey can be used to disinfect wounds and treat skin diseases, as it fights pathogens and prevents them from spreading. Honey also has a dehydrating effect and dries out wounds quickly, which accelerates healing. Honey can also help with eczema, allergies and insect bites, as it soothes the skin and relieves itching.

What should you bear in mind when giving your dog honey?

Honey is healthy, but also very sweet and high in calories. You should therefore only give your dog small amounts of honey, about half a teaspoon to a teaspoon a day, depending on your dog's size and weight. Too much honey can lead to obesity, tooth decay or diabetes, especially in dogs that are prone to these diseases.

You should also pay attention to the type of honey you give your dog. Natural, cold extracted honey from organic beekeeping that does not contain additives or residues of pesticides or antibiotics is best. You can also choose local honey that comes from plants in your area. This can help your dog develop a tolerance to pollen and other allergens.

However, puppies and dogs with weakened immune systems should not be given honey, as it can contain bacterial spores that can be dangerous for these dogs. This is especially true for raw honey that has not been pasteurized or filtered. Dogs with a sugar intolerance or a honey allergy should also not be given honey.

Honey is a sweet and healthy food that also has many benefits for dogs. Honey can help with various ailments, both internally and externally, and strengthen the immune system. However, you should only give your dog small amounts of honey and pay attention to the quality and origin of the honey. Honey is not a substitute for a balanced diet or veterinary treatment, but a supplement that can promote your dog's well-being.
