A representation of Hokkaido

Do you love pumpkin and want to share it with your dog? Then we have good news for you: Hokkaido is a type of pumpkin that you can safely feed to your four-legged friend. In this article, you'll find out what Hokkaido is, what benefits it has for your dog and what you should look out for.

What is Hokkaido?

Hokkaido is a small, round pumpkin with an orange or green skin. It originates from Japan, where it was named after the northernmost island. Hokkaido has a firm, sweet flesh that is ideal for soups, casseroles and cakes. The special thing about Hokkaido is that it can be eaten with its skin, as this is very thin and soft.

What are the benefits of Hokkaido for dogs?

Hokkaido is not only delicious, but also very healthy for your dog. The ripe fruit contains lots of vitamins, minerals and fiber, which support your dog's immune system, digestion and skin. Hokkaido is also low in calories and filling, ideal for dogs that tend to be overweight. In addition, (raw) pumpkin seeds help against tapeworm infestation, as they contain the active ingredient cucurbitacin, which paralyzes the parasites1.

What should I bear in mind?

Although Hokkaido is suitable for dogs, it should not be fed in large quantities or raw. Too much pumpkin can lead to diarrhea or flatulence, as it contains a lot of water and fiber. Raw pumpkin can also be difficult to digest and cause stomach problems. It is therefore advisable to boil or steam it before giving it to your dog. You can give it as a side dish with food or as a treat between meals. However, be careful not to spice or sweeten the pumpkin, as this can be harmful to your dog.

Hokkaido is a great ingredient for your dog and has many health benefits. You can prepare it in a simple and versatile way and offer your dog a change from its normal food. However, Hokkaido is not a substitute for a balanced diet, but a supplement.
