You may have heard of goose heart, a special ingredient found in some types of dog food. But what is goose heart and how healthy is it for your four-legged friend? In this article, you'll find out everything you need to know about goose heart for dogs.

What are goose hearts?

Goose hearts are, as the name suggests, the hearts of geese. They belong to the so-called offal or offal by-products that are produced during the processing of poultry. Goose hearts are rich in protein, iron and vitamin B12 and have a high content of taurine, an important amino acid for dogs.

How are goose hearts processed for dogs?

Goose hearts can be processed for dogs in various ways. One option is to feed them raw, for example as part of a BARF diet (Biologically Appropriate Raw Food). However, care must be taken to ensure that the goose hearts are fresh and of good quality and do not contain any pathogens. In addition, goose hearts should not be fed too often, as they are very high in fat and can cause diarrhea.

Another option is to cook or dry the goose hearts. This makes them last longer and they lose fewer nutrients than if they are fed raw. You can give cooked or dried goose hearts as a treat or as a supplement to the normal food. You can prepare them yourself or buy them ready-made.

What are the benefits of goose hearts for dogs?

Goose hearts have several advantages for dogs. Firstly, they are a natural and species-appropriate ingredient that is suitable for dogs as carnivores. Secondly, they provide important nutrients for the dog's health. Protein, for example, is important for muscle development and the immune system. Iron supports the formation of red blood cells and the transportation of oxygen in the blood. Vitamin B12 supports cell division and nerve function. Taurine is important for your dog's heart health and eyesight.

What are the disadvantages of goose hearts for dogs?

Goose hearts also have some disadvantages for dogs. Firstly, they are very high in fat and can therefore lead to obesity or digestive problems if they are fed too often or in too large quantities. Secondly, they can contain harmful substances such as antibiotics or hormones if they come from conventional animal husbandry. These can have a negative impact on your dog's health.

How much goose heart can my dog eat?

The amount of goose heart you can feed your dog depends on various factors such as your dog's age, weight, activity level and state of health. However, as a rule of thumb, goose hearts should not make up more than 10% of the daily food ration. This means, for example, that a 10 kg dog should not eat more than 50 g of goose hearts per day.

Goose hearts are a special ingredient for dogs that has many benefits, but also some disadvantages. They are rich in protein, iron, vitamin B12 and taurine and can promote a dog's health. However, they are also very high in fat and can contain harmful substances if they come from conventional farming.
