Grape marc

Grape marc is a by-product of wine production, consisting of the skins, seeds and stems of grapes. It is often used as animal feed or fertilizer, but is it also suitable for dogs? In this article, you'll find out what grape pomace is, what its advantages and disadvantages are and why you shouldn't feed it to your dog.

What is grape marc?

Grape marc is what remains after the grapes have been pressed. It still contains residues of pulp, juice, sugar and acids, but also fiber, minerals and polyphenols. Polyphenols are secondary plant substances that have antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties. They can, for example, strengthen the immune system, lower blood pressure or reduce the risk of cancer.

Grape pomace is often dried or fermented to make it more durable and increase its nutritional value. It can then be used as animal feed for cattle, pigs or poultry as it is a good source of energy and protein. It can also be used as fertilizer or compost for the garden as it enriches the soil with nutrients.

What are the benefits of grape pomace for dogs?

Grape pomace could theoretically also have some benefits for dogs, considering the positive effects of polyphenols. For example, it could promote skin and coat health, aid digestion or improve dental hygiene. It could also be used as a treat or activity as it has a sweet taste and crunchy texture.

What are the disadvantages of grape pomace for dogs?

Unfortunately, the disadvantages of grape pomace for dogs far outweigh the potential benefits. This is because grape pomace, just like grapes or raisins, can lead to severe poisoning in dogs. The exact cause of this has not yet been clarified, but it is probably due to the tartaric acid (chemically potassium bitartrate) it contains, which can lead to kidney failure in dogs.

The symptoms of grape pomace poisoning can occur within 24 hours of ingestion and should be taken very seriously. They may include vomiting, loss of appetite, listlessness, diarrhea or abdominal pain. In severe cases, dehydration, seizures, coma or death may occur.

The amount of grape pomace that is dangerous to a dog is not exactly known and can vary from dog to dog. There are cases where just a few grams have been enough to have fatal consequences. Therefore, you should not take any risks and should not feed your dog grape pomace or give him access to it.
