What is grape juice?

Why is grape juice toxic to dogs?

Unlike apple juice and Gatorade, what makes grape juice dangerous to dogs is not the mere presence of sugar - that's manageable. The problem with grape juice is the actual grape poisoning.
Grape poisoning is a serious condition that can occur in dogs when they eat or drink grapes or raisins. The exact cause of grape poisoning is not yet known, but it can lead to acute kidney failure, which can be life-threatening. Peeled and seedless grapes are also poisonous to dogs.

The severity of symptoms depends on the size of the dog, the amount of juice ingested and individual sensitivity. Some dogs can eat kilos of grapes and have no problems, while others can become ill after just a few berries.
What are the symptoms of grape poisoning in dogs?
The symptoms of grape poisoning in dogs can occur within a few hours or days of ingestion. The most common signs include :
- Vomiting and/or diarrhea
- abdominal pain
- loss of appetite
- apathy
- Dehydration
- Increased drinking and urination
- Little or no urination
- Blood in the urine
- Weakness
- Trembling
- Seizures
- Coma
If you notice these symptoms in your dog, you should see a vet immediately. Untreated grape poisoning can lead to death.
What to do if your dog has drunk grape juice
If you suspect that your dog has drunk grape juice, you should waste no time and take him to the vet. The sooner treatment begins, the better the chances of a full recovery. Treatment may include the following:
- Inducing vomiting to remove as much of the juice from the stomach as possible.
- Administering activated charcoal to prevent the absorption of toxins in the intestines.
- Fluid therapy to support kidney function and flush toxins from the blood.
- Medication to treat nausea, pain and inflammation.
- Dialysis or kidney transplantation in severe cases.
Grape juice is not a suitable drink for dogs. It can cause grape poisoning, which can lead to acute kidney failure and even death. If you want to do something good for your dog, give him fresh water or another dog-friendly juice such as carrot or cucumber juice. And always keep him away from grapes, raisins and other grape-containing products.
