Gamma-oryzanol

A representation of Gamma-oryzanol

Gamma-oryzanol is a natural active ingredient extracted from rice germ oil. It is a mixture of various fatty acid esters with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Gamma-Oryzanol is mainly used as a food supplement for dogs with increased energy and muscle requirements, such as breeding and performance dogs. However, older dogs or dogs with joint problems can also benefit from gamma-oryzanol.

How does gamma-oryzanol work in dogs?

Gamma-Oryzanol has several positive effects on the dog's organism:

  • It promotes the build-up of muscle mass and prevents the breakdown of muscle tissue. Gamma-Oryzanol stimulates the release of growth hormones and inhibits the production of cortisol, a stress hormone with a catabolic (catabolic) effect.
  • It supports fertility in dogs by improving the quality and quantity of sperm and regulating hormone balance. Gamma-oryzanol also has a positive effect on the uterus and milk production in pregnant and lactating bitches.
  • It protects the cells from oxidative stress and free radicals, which can lead to ageing processes and chronic inflammation. Gamma-oryzanol strengthens the immune system and can reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease, diabetes and cancer.
  • It improves blood lipid levels by lowering cholesterol and improving the ratio of HDL (good cholesterol) to LDL (bad cholesterol). Gamma-oryzanol can also stabilize blood sugar levels and increase insulin sensitivity.
  • It relieves joint pain and promotes the regeneration of cartilage tissue. Gamma-Oryzanol has an anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving effect on the joints and can improve the mobility and quality of life of dogs with osteoarthritis or other joint diseases.

How can Gamma-Oryzanol be administered to dogs?

Gamma-Oryzanol is available in various dosage forms such as oil, tablets or gel. The dosage depends on the size, weight and health of the dog. In general, the recommended daily dose is 50 to 100 mg per 10 kg body weight.

Gamma-Oryzanol is best administered with a meal to ensure optimal absorption. The oil can simply be given with food, while the tablets or gel can be given directly into the dog's mouth.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of Gamma-Oryzanol for dogs?

Gamma-Oryzanol has many benefits for dogs with increased energy requirements or joint problems. It can strengthen muscles, promote fertility, protect the immune system and improve joint function. Gamma-Oryzanol is a natural product and contains no synthetic hormones or steroids.

However, there are some disadvantages and risks that should be considered:

  • One disadvantage of gamma-oryzanol is that it can affect thyroid function. Gamma-oryzanol can inhibit the formation of thyroid hormones and thus lead to hypothyroidism. This can have a negative effect on your dog's metabolism, growth and behavior. If your dog already suffers from thyroid disease or is taking medication for it, you should not give him gamma-oryzanol.
  • Another disadvantage of gamma-oryzanol is that it can cause digestive problems. Gamma-oryzanol is a fat component and can therefore impair fat digestion. This can result in diarrhea, flatulence or vomiting. To avoid this, the dosage of gamma-oryzanol should be increased slowly and should not exceed 1 gram per 10 kilograms of body weight per day.
  • A third disadvantage of gamma-oryzanol is that it can interact with other medications. Gamma-oryzanol can increase or weaken the effect of antihypertensive, blood-thinning or hormonal medications. This can lead to undesirable side effects or reduced therapeutic success.

To summarize, gamma-oryzanol can have some benefits for your dog's health and performance, but also some disadvantages. You should therefore inform yourself well and weigh up whether the administration of gamma-oryzanol makes sense for your dog or not.
