Frankincense

A representation of Frankincense

Frankincense is a natural substance extracted from the resin of certain trees. Frankincense has been used for thousands of years in various cultures as an incense, remedy or cosmetic. But can frankincense also help dogs? In this article, you will find out what frankincense is, how it works and what advantages and disadvantages it has for your four-legged friend.

What is frankincense and how does it work?

Frankincense is the dried resin of trees of the Boswellia genus, which grow mainly in Africa and Asia. The resin contains various ingredients that have anti-inflammatory, pain-relieving and immunomodulating properties. The most important of these are the so-called boswellic acids, which have shown positive effects on chronic inflammation in various studies.

Frankincense can be used orally or externally. When used orally, the resin is processed into powder or capsules that can be added to food or water. For external use, the resin is made into ointments or oils that can be applied to the skin or coat.

What are the benefits of frankincense for dogs?

Frankincense can help dogs with various ailments associated with inflammation. These include, for example:

  • Osteoarthritis: frankincense can relieve joint pain and stiffness and improve mobility. It can also slow down the breakdown of cartilage and promote the formation of new cartilage.
  • Allergies: Frankincense can dampen the excessive immune response in allergies and reduce symptoms such as itching, redness or swelling. It can also inhibit the formation of antibodies against allergens.
  • Skin problems: Frankincense can accelerate the healing of wounds, eczema or infections and reduce scarring. It can also increase skin hydration and strengthen the skin barrier.
  • Respiratory diseases: Frankincense can soothe the mucous membrane of the respiratory tract and promote mucus clearance. It can also dilate the bronchial tubes and ease coughing.
  • Digestive problems: Frankincense can protect the lining of the stomach and intestines and stimulate digestion. It can also relieve cramps, flatulence or diarrhea.

What are the disadvantages of frankincense for dogs?

Frankincense is generally well tolerated by dogs, but there are a few points to bear in mind:

  • Dosage: the correct dosage of frankincense depends on various factors, such as the dog's weight, age and state of health. There is no generally applicable recommendation for the dosage of frankincense for dogs, so you should always consult your vet or the manufacturer. An overdose of frankincense can lead to side effects such as gastrointestinal complaints or blood clotting disorders.
  • Quality: The quality of frankincense varies depending on its origin, processing and storage. There are different types of frankincense that contain different amounts of boswellic acids. Indian frankincense (Boswellia serrata), which is most commonly used for medicinal purposes, has the highest concentration. You should always pay attention to high purity and a high content of boswellic acids and only buy products from reputable suppliers.

Frankincense, the dried resin of boswellia trees, has anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving properties thanks to boswellic acids. It can be helpful for dogs with osteoarthritis, allergies, skin problems, respiratory diseases and digestive problems. The correct dosage is important to avoid side effects, and the quality of frankincense varies depending on its origin and processing.
