  • Elderflower tea: This can be given as drinking water or with food. To make the tea, pour 250 ml of boiling water over a teaspoon of dried elderflowers and leave to infuse for 10 minutes. Then strain and leave to cool. The tea should be drunk within 24 hours.
  • Elderflower syrup: Elderflower syrup can be used as a snack or to sweeten food. To make the syrup, boil 500 ml of water with 500 g of sugar and add 50 g of fresh or dried elderflowers. Boil the mixture for 10 minutes and leave to cool. Then strain and pour into a clean bottle. The syrup can be kept in the fridge for several weeks.
  • Elderflower oil: This oil can be used externally for skin problems or for massage. To do this, fill a jar with fresh or dried elderflowers and cover with a high-quality vegetable oil such as olive oil or almond oil. Seal the jar and leave it in a warm place for two to four weeks. Then strain and pour into a dark bottle. The oil will keep for several months.

The dosage of elderflower for dogs depends on the size, weight and health of the animal. In general, less is more. Start with a small amount and observe your dog's reaction.

Risks of elderflower for dogs

Elderflower is generally well tolerated by dogs, but there are some things you should be aware of:

  • Not all parts of elderberry are edible. Berries, leaves, bark and roots contain toxic substances such as sambunigrin, which can lead to vomiting, diarrhea, cramps or respiratory distress. Therefore, only use the flowers and make sure that the dog does not nibble on other parts of the plant.
  • Some dogs can have an allergic reaction to elderflower. Watch out for signs such as a skin rash, itching, swelling or breathing difficulties.
