Eggs

A representation of Eggs

Eggs are a popular food for humans, but what about dogs? Can dogs eat eggs? And if so, how many and in what form? In this article, you'll find out everything you need to know about eggs for dogs.

What are eggs?

Eggs are the fertilized or unfertilized egg cells of birds, usually chickens. They consist of a shell, an egg white and an egg yolk. Eggs contain many nutrients such as proteins, fats, vitamins and minerals. They are therefore a valuable food supplement for dogs.

Benefits of eggs for dogs

Eggs have many benefits for dogs, especially when they are cooked. Boiled eggs are:

  • A source of essential amino acids, which are important for many metabolic processes.
  • A support for the formation of new body cells and muscle tissue.
  • A source of essential fatty acids, which ensure a healthy, shiny coat.
  • A supply of vitamins, such as vitamins A, B, D, E and K, which are important for the eyes, skin, bones, blood clotting and immune system.
  • A supply of minerals such as calcium, phosphorus, iron, zinc and selenium, which are important for bones, teeth, oxygen transport, wound healing and thyroid function.

Disadvantages of eggs for dogs

Eggs also have some disadvantages for dogs, especially when they are raw. Raw eggs are:

  • A risk for salmonella infection, which can lead to diarrhea, vomiting, fever and loss of appetite.
  • An inhibitor of the absorption of biotin, a vitamin that is important for the skin, coat, nerves and metabolism. Raw egg white contains a protein called avidin, which binds biotin and renders it unusable.
  • This is a trigger for an allergic reaction that can lead to itching, skin rashes, breathing difficulties or shock. Eggs are one of the most common allergens for dogs.

How many eggs should dogs be fed and in what form?

The optimal amount and form of eggs for dogs depends on various factors, such as the dog's age, weight, state of health and diet. However, the general rule is:

  • Cooked eggs are better tolerated than raw eggs.
  • The egg yolk can also be fed raw, but the egg white should always be cooked.
  • One or two boiled eggs per week are a good supplement for dogs.
  • Eggs should not be your dog's main source of food, but should only form part of its balanced diet.
  • Eggs should always be fed fresh and without shells.
  • Eggs should always be chewed or chopped well to avoid choking.
  • Eggs should always be offered with water to aid digestion.

Eggs are a valuable food component for dogs, providing them with many nutrients. However, they should always be fed cooked and in moderation to avoid possible risks.
