Eel

A representation of Eel

The eel is a snake-like fish species that is found in fresh and salt water. Eel has a high fat content and is rich in omega-3 fatty acids, vitamins and minerals. But is eel also suitable for dogs? In this article, you can find out more about the advantages and disadvantages of eel as dog food.

Benefits of eel for dogs

Eel can have several health benefits for dogs, especially for their skin and coat. The omega-3 fatty acids in eel can reduce inflammation, promote blood circulation and strengthen the immune system. They can also soothe dry skin and make the coat shiny.

Eel can also have a positive effect on heart health. The omega-3 fatty acids can lower blood pressure, regulate cholesterol levels and reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease.

Eel can also be a good source of protein for dogs that suffer from a fish allergy. Eel is a hypoallergenic fish that rarely triggers allergic reactions.

Disadvantages of eel as dog food

However, eel also has some disadvantages as dog food. Firstly, eel is very high in fat and can therefore lead to obesity or digestive problems if it is fed in large quantities. In addition, the high fat content can lead to life-threatening inflammation of the pancreas in some dogs.

On the other hand, eel can be contaminated with harmful substances such as mercury or dioxin. These can accumulate in the dog's body and lead to health problems. Young or weakened dogs and pregnant or nursing bitches are particularly at risk.

How do I feed eel correctly?

If you want to feed your dog eel occasionally, there are a few things you should bear in mind:

  • Choose fresh or frozen eel from a trustworthy source. Avoid smoked or pickled eel as it often contains a lot of salt or preservatives.
  • Cook the eel well or grill it without oil or seasoning. Raw or undercooked meat can contain parasites that can harm your dog.
  • Remove all bones from the meat. They can get caught in your dog's throat or gastrointestinal tract and cause injury.
  • Only give your dog small amounts of eel as a treat or as an addition to their normal food. A rule of thumb is about 10 grams per kilogram of body weight per week.
  • Observe your dog after feeding for possible signs of intolerance or allergy such as vomiting, diarrhea or itching.

Eel can be a tasty and healthy food for dogs when fed in moderation. It can promote skin, coat and heart health and be an alternative for dogs with allergies. However, you should pay attention to the origin of the fish as well as the high fat content and possible harmful substances in the meat.
