Drinking water

A representation of Drinking water

Water is essential for all living creatures, including our four-legged friends. But how much water does a dog actually need? And what type of water is best? In this article, you'll find out everything you need to know about drinking water for dogs.

How much water should a dog drink?

The amount of water a dog should drink each day depends on various factors, such as its weight, activity level and the outside temperature. As a general rule, a dog should drink the following amount of water per day:

100 ml of water for every kg of body weight

If it is very hot or your dog is very active, the amount of water they need to drink can be significantly higher. Experts sometimes assume up to 150 ml per kilogram of body weight.

What type of water is best for dogs?

Most dogs can drink tap water without any problems as long as it is not contaminated or polluted. You can find out the quality of your tap water from your local water supplier or have a water test carried out.

If the tap water is not suitable or your dog does not like it, you can also offer him mineral water. However, you should always choose still water. Carbon dioxide can cause stomach problems and flatulence in sensitive dogs.

What are the benefits of drinking water for dogs?

Drinking water fulfills many important functions in your dog's body. Among other things, it helps

  • Regulate the body temperature
  • Transport nutrients
  • Eliminate waste products
  • Lubricate the joints
  • Keep the skin and coat healthy

A lack of water can lead to dehydration, which can result in symptoms such as dry mucous membranes, sunken eyes and reduced skin elasticity. Dehydration can have serious consequences and, in the worst case, can lead to death.

It is therefore important that you always provide your dog with fresh, clean drinking water and make sure that he drinks regularly.

Drinking water is essential for your dog's health and well-being. You should make sure that your dog drinks enough water and offer him a suitable type of water. This will help your dog to live a long and happy life.
