Daturas are a plant genus within the nightshade family (Solanaceae). The 9 to 14 species worldwide are all highly poisonous and contain alkaloids such as atropine, hyoscyamine and scopolamine. These substances have an effect on the nervous system and can lead to hallucinations, excitement, convulsions, palpitations, respiratory paralysis and death. What is datura?

Datura (Datura stramonium) is an annual or short-lived herbaceous plant that originates from Mexico and south-eastern North America, but is now found all over the world. The plant grows on waste ground, wasteland, in abandoned gardens and along roadsides, mainly in areas with a favorable climate. It grows up to 1.2 meters tall and has dark green, irregularly lobed leaves. The flowers are large, white or purple and funnel-shaped. The fruits are spherical capsules with many spines containing numerous black seeds.

How does datura affect dogs?

Datura is very dangerous for dogs as all parts of the plant are poisonous, especially the seeds. Eating just a few seeds can lead to severe poisoning. Symptoms usually occur within 30 minutes to two hours after ingestion and can vary depending on the dose. Typical signs are

How can you prevent datura poisoning?

Also make sure that your dog does not eat any garden waste or compost that may contain datura seeds. When walking your dog outdoors, always keep an eye on him and don't let him nibble on unknown plants. If you suspect that your dog has eaten datura, you should waste no time and take him to the vet immediately.
