Cynoglossin

A representation of Cynoglossin

Cynoglossin is an ingredient of common hound's tongue (Cynoglossum officinale), a herbaceous plant from the Boraginaceae family. The plant has blue or purple flowers and hairy leaves that resemble a dog's tongue. It grows in the temperate zones of Europe, Asia and America and has been used as a medicinal plant since the Middle Ages.

The effect of cynoglossin

Cynoglossin belongs to the pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PA), a group of chemical compounds that occur in many plants and have a protective function against predators. Cynoglossin has an anti-inflammatory, expectorant and wound-healing effect. It is mainly used to treat coughs, bronchitis, asthma, sore throats and skin diseases.

Risks of cynoglossin

Like all PAs, cynoglossine can also be harmful to health if the dosage is too high or if it is used long-term. It can damage the liver and increase the risk of liver cancer. It can also trigger allergic reactions or impair blood clotting. Cynoglossine should therefore only be used under medical supervision and for no longer than four weeks per year2.

Use of cynoglossin in dogs

Cynoglossin can also be used in dogs to treat respiratory and skin problems. However, there are no scientific studies on the efficacy and safety of cynoglossin in dogs. Therefore, a veterinarian should always be consulted before using cynoglossin in dogs. Care should also be taken to ensure that the dog does not accidentally eat the plant or come into contact with it, as this can lead to symptoms of poisoning.

Cynoglossin is a natural active ingredient from dog's tongue that has a healing effect on various ailments. However, it also harbors risks for humans and animals and should therefore only be used with caution.
