Cranberries are small red berries that grow mainly in North America. They are often used as a healthy ingredient in juices, jams or muesli bars. But did you know that cranberries can also be good for dogs? In this article, you will find out what cranberry extract is and how it can help your four-legged friend.

What is cranberry extract?

Cranberry extract is a concentrate from the fruit of the cranberry plant. It contains many valuable ingredients such as vitamin C, antioxidants, flavonoids and proanthocyanidins. These substances can have various positive effects on the health of dogs.

Benefits of cranberry extract for dogs

One of the most well-known benefits of cranberry extract is the prevention and treatment of urinary tract infections (UTIs). Urinary tract infections are common conditions in dogs caused by bacteria. They can cause pain, blood in the urine, frequent urination and fever. Cranberry extract can prevent the bacteria from adhering to the bladder wall and thus contain or prevent the infection.

Another benefit of cranberry extract is that it supports oral health. Studies have shown that cranberry extract can reduce the formation of plaque and tartar. This can reduce the risk of gum inflammation, tooth decay and bad breath. Cranberry extract can also strengthen the immune system and inhibit inflammation.

Disadvantages of cranberry extract for dogs

Cranberry extract is generally well tolerated by dogs, but there are also some possible disadvantages. Firstly, cranberry extract can lower the pH value of the urine and thus lead to hyperacidity. This can lead to irritation or the formation of bladder or kidney stones in some dogs. The pH value of the urine should therefore always be checked before cranberry extract is administered.

Cranberry extract can also interact with some medications and influence their effect. This applies in particular to blood-thinning medications such as warfarin or aspirin. If your dog is taking such medications, you should talk to your vet beforehand about whether you can give him cranberry extract.

How much and how often should I give my dog cranberry extract?

The dosage of cranberry extract depends on various factors such as the dog's weight, age and state of health. There is no universal recommendation, but a rule of thumb is about 100 mg per kilogram of body weight per day. You can give your dog cranberry extract in the form of capsules, tablets or powder. It is best to mix it into his food or give it to him as a treat.

You should not give your dog cranberry extract all the time, but only when needed or as a cure. For example, you can give him cranberry extract if he shows signs of urinary tract infections or if he is prone to tartar. A cure should not last longer than four to six weeks. After that, take a break or reduce the dosage.

Cranberry extract can be a useful addition to your dog's diet. It can help prevent or treat UTIs, improve their oral health and boost their immune system. However, you should always be aware of possible side effects or interactions and stick to the correct dosage.
