Cocoa bean

A representation of Cocoa bean

The cocoa bean is the fruit of the cocoa tree and the basis for chocolate. In addition to many other substances, it also contains theobromine, an alkaloid that is harmless to humans but can be toxic to dogs.

What is theobromine?

Theobromine is a stimulant that has a similar effect to caffeine. It affects the cardiovascular and nervous systems of dogs and can lead to agitation, restlessness, tremors, convulsions and cardiac arrhythmia. In high doses, it can even lead to death from heart failure or respiratory paralysis.

How much theobromine is dangerous for dogs?

The toxicity of theobromine depends on the amount and type of chocolate. The darker and more bitter the chocolate, the more theobromine it contains. For example, raw cocoa has 18-35 mg/g theobromine, while white chocolate has only 0.5 mg/g. The weight of the dog also plays a role. The smaller the dog, the less chocolate it can tolerate.

There is no exact limit for the lethal dose of theobromine for dogs, but it is thought to be between 100 and 500 mg/kg body weight. This means, for example:

  • A 5 kg dog could die from just 50 g of dark chocolate.
  • A 20 kg dog could die from 200 g of milk chocolate.

But even smaller amounts can lead to symptoms of poisoning.

What are the symptoms of theobromine poisoning?

The symptoms of theobromine poisoning can vary depending on the severity. They usually occur within 4 to 24 hours after eating chocolate. The most common symptoms include

  • Vomiting
  • diarrhea
  • thirst
  • restlessness
  • trembling
  • cramps
  • palpitations
  • shortness of breath

In severe cases, loss of consciousness or coma may also occur.

If you suspect that your dog has eaten chocolate or is showing any of these symptoms, you should see a vet immediately.
