Carrot pomace

A representation of Carrot pomace

Carrot pomace is a by-product of carrot juice production. It is the fibrous residue that remains after the carrots have been pressed. Carrot pomace still contains many valuable ingredients, such as beta-carotene, vitamin A, vitamin C, potassium, iron and fiber. Carrot pomace can be used as a supplementary food for dogs to aid digestion, strengthen the immune system and improve eyesight.

How is carrot pomace fed to dogs?

Carrot pomace can be fed both fresh and dried. However, fresh carrot pomace should not be kept in the fridge for longer than two days, otherwise it may spoil. Dried carrot pomace has a longer shelf life and can be bought as mini carrots from Vollmer's, for example. These can be given as a treat or added to the main feed.

The amount of carrot pomace a dog can eat per day depends on its size, weight and state of health. As a rule of thumb, no more than 10% of a dog's daily diet should consist of carrot pomace. This corresponds to about a handful for a medium-sized dog.

What are the benefits of carrot pomace for dogs?

Carrot pomace has many health benefits for dogs:

  • It aids digestion by cleansing the intestines and supporting the intestinal flora. It can help with diarrhea or constipation by making the stool firmer or softer. It can also prevent hairballs that can form in the gastrointestinal tract.
  • Itstrengthens the immune system by increasing the body's defenses and inhibiting inflammation. It can help with skin problems, allergies or infections by accelerating wound healing and regenerating the skin.
  • It improves eyesight by supplying the eyes with beta-carotene and vitamin A. It can help with eye diseases such as cataracts or night blindness by protecting the retina and increasing visual acuity.

What are the disadvantages of carrot pomace for dogs?

Carrot pomace also has some disadvantages for dogs' health:

  • It can cause bloating or diarrhea if fed in too large quantities or too quickly. It should therefore always be introduced slowly and adapted to the dog's individual tolerance.
  • It can lead to an overdose of vitamin A if it is fed together with other foods containing vitamin A or food supplements. This can lead to symptoms of intoxication such as loss of appetite, weight loss, hair loss or bone damage.
  • It can lead to discoloration of the coat if fed in excessive quantities. Although this is harmless, it may be undesirable for some dog owners.

Carrot pomace is a healthy complementary food for dogs that has many benefits for digestion, the immune system and vision. However, it should be fed in moderation to avoid possible disadvantages such as flatulence, diarrhea, vitamin A overdose or coat discoloration. Carrot pomace can be fed fresh or dried and is available in different flavors.
