What is butter?

Butter is a fat that is made from the cream of cow's milk. The fat droplets are combined into a solid mass by beating or churning the cream. The remaining liquid is called buttermilk. Butter has a high fat content of around 80 percent and also contains some water, milk protein and lactose. Butter is rich in saturated fatty acids and cholesterol, but also in fat-soluble vitamins such as A, D, E and K.

Benefits of butter for dogs

Butter has no particular benefits for dogs as it contains no nutrients that they cannot get from other sources. Although the fat-soluble vitamins are important for dogs' health, they are also found in other foods such as meat, eggs or liver. Furthermore, dogs only need very small amounts of these vitamins, which they can easily obtain from a balanced diet.

Disadvantages of butter for dogs

Butter has several disadvantages for dogs that can affect their health. The main ones are:

• High fat content: butter is very high in fat and can cause digestive problems such as bloating, diarrhea or vomiting in dogs. High fat consumption can also lead to overweight and obesity, which in turn increases the risk of cardiovascular disease, diabetes and joint problems.
• Lactose intolerance: Many dogs are lactose intolerant and cannot digest lactose well. This can lead to abdominal pain, cramps or diarrhea. Although butter only contains a small amount of lactose (around 0.7 grams per 100 grams), even a small amount can cause discomfort in sensitive dogs.
• Allergies: Some dogs are allergic to dairy products and react to butter with a skin rash, itching or breathing difficulties. This can be life-threatening and requires an immediate visit to the vet.
