A representation of Bombay Duck

You may have heard of the Bombay Duck, but do you know what it is? No, it's not a duck from India, but a fish from the order of lizard fish. It is also known as the bummalo, bombil or lote and originates from the Indo-Pacific. It has a long, slender body with translucent skin and grows up to 40 cm long. But what does this fish have to do with dogs? In this article you can find out more about the Bombay Duck as a chew for your four-legged friend.

What is Bombay Duck?

The Bombay Duck is a popular edible fish in India and Bangladesh, where it is eaten fresh or dried. The name allegedly comes from a British officer who compared the smell of the dried fish to the smell of newspapers and letters from Bombay. Dried fish has a very intense smell and taste, which is not to everyone's taste. It is often sprinkled over curries or rice or served as a side dish.

Is Bombay Duck healthy for dogs?

Bombay Duck has a high protein content of around 55% and contains many important vitamins and minerals such as vitamin A, B12, D, iron and iodine. These nutrients support the health of your dog's skin, coat, eyes, nerves and thyroid. In addition, Bombay Duck is very low in fat with only approx. 4% fat and is therefore also a good snack for overweight or allergic dogs.

How can Bombay Duck be fed to dogs?

Bombay Duck is available as whole fish without the head or in fine fillets. You can give it to your dog just like that or heat it up in the oven beforehand or fry it in a pan until crispy. Dried fish is hard and chewy and provides your dog with something to chew on. This cleans the teeth and strengthens the chewing muscles.

What are the disadvantages of Bombay Duck?

As with any new snack, you should first give your dog a small amount and observe how he reacts to it. Some dogs do not like the strong smell or taste of Bombay Duck or do not tolerate it well. This can lead to diarrhea or vomiting. You should also make sure that your dog drinks enough water, as the dried fish dehydrates the body.

Bombay Duck is an exotic fish snack for dogs with many health benefits. It is rich in protein, vitamins and minerals and contains very little fat. It is good for brushing teeth and strengthening the chewing muscles. However, it should only be fed in moderation and attention should be paid to its digestibility.
