Black tea

A representation of Black tea

Black tea is a popular drink made from the leaves of the tea plant (Camellia sinensis). Fermentation and roasting give the tea its dark color and strong aroma. Black tea contains many healthy ingredients such as antioxidants, flavonoids and polyphenols. But is it also suitable for dogs?

The dangers of black tea for dogs

Unfortunately, no. Black tea also contains teein or caffeine, which is toxic to dogs. Caffeine stimulates the nervous and circulatory systems of dogs and can lead to severe symptoms such as palpitations, tremors, convulsions or even cardiac arrest. The lethal dose of caffeine for dogs is around 110 mg per kilogram of body weight. This corresponds to about one cup of black tea or coffee.

Therefore, you should always keep your dog away from black tea and other caffeinated drinks such as coffee or cola. Even if your dog only drinks small amounts or nibbles on a used tea bag, he may already be showing signs of poisoning. If you suspect that your dog has ingested caffeine, you should consult a vet immediately.

The alternatives to black tea for dogs

If you want to do something good for your dog, you can offer him herbal or fruit teasinstead. These teas do not contain caffeine and often have a calming or healing effect on dogs. For example, chamomile tea, fennel tea or peppermint tea can help with stomach problems. Melissa tea or valerian tea can relax nervousness or anxiety. Hibiscus tea or nettle tea can strengthen the immune system. However, you should always make sure that the tea does not contain any added sugar or other harmful substances.

To make the tea palatable for your dog, you can dilute it with a little water and serve it lukewarm. You can also add a little honey, but only in small quantities. The recommended amount of tea for dogs is about one teaspoon per kilogram of body weight per day. However, you should always monitor your dog's tolerance and reduce or stop the amount if necessary.

Black tea is a tasty and healthy drink for humans, but not for dogs. It contains caffeine, which is toxic to dogs and can lead to severe poisoning. Therefore, you should never let your dog drink black tea or give him access to caffeinated drinks. If you want to offer your dog an alternative to water, you can give him herbal or fruit teas, which have no side effects and often have positive effects on his health.
