Bitter substances

A representation of Bitter substances

Bitters are natural substances that occur in many plants and have a bitter taste. They can have a positive effect on the digestion and health of dogs, but can also pose risks.

What are bitter substances?

Bitter substances are secondary plant substances that are produced by plants as protection against predators or pathogens. They stimulate the taste buds and trigger various reactions in the body. For example, they promote the production of saliva, gastric juice and bile, which improves digestion. They also have an anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and immune-boosting effect.

Which bitter substances are suitable for dogs?

There are many plants and herbs that contain bitter substances and are suitable for dogs. These include, for example, dandelion, artichoke, yarrow, gentian and turmeric. These can be added fresh or dried to the food or given as a juice or tea. However, the amount should always be adapted to the dog's weight and state of health.

What are the benefits of bitter substances for dogs?

Bitters can help or prevent various ailments in dogs. For example, they can:

  • Relieve gastrointestinal problems such as flatulence, diarrhea or constipation
  • Support liver and bile function and thus promote detoxification
  • Strengthen the immune system and ward off infections
  • Stimulate the appetite and increase the feeling of satiety
  • Regulate blood sugar levels and prevent diabetes

What are the disadvantages of bitter substances for dogs?

Bitters are not always harmless for dogs. There are some risks that should be considered:

  • Some bitters can be toxic if fed in too high a dose or too frequently. For example, cucurbitacin, a bitter substance in zucchinis or pumpkin plants, can lead to symptoms of poisoning such as vomiting, diarrhea or cramps.
  • Some bitter substances can trigger allergies or intolerances. For example, turmeric can cause skin rashes or itching in some dogs.
  • Some bitter substances can interact with medications and strengthen or weaken their effect. For example, artichoke can increase the effect of blood-thinning medication.

Bitters are a natural way to improve the digestion and health of dogs. However, they should always be dosed with caution.
