Balsam is a plant that you may have seen along the roadside or in the forest. It has colorful flowers and long pods that burst open when touched and spread their seeds far and wide. What is balsam?

Balsam belongs to the balsam family and is originally from Asia. There are various types of balsam, which differ in size, color and shape. The best known are the glandular balsam (Impatiens glandulifera) and the lesser balsam (Impatiens parviflora), both of which are considered invasive neophytes. This means that they can spread rapidly in foreign ecosystems and displace native plants.

Balsam grows mainly in damp locations such as stream banks, meadows or forest edges. It blooms from June to October and attracts many insects that suck the nectar from the flowers. The pods of the balsam contain many small seeds that are ejected explosively when ripe or touched. They can fly up to seven meters. This is how balsam spreads.

What are the benefits of balsam for dogs?

Balsam is not poisonous to dogs and can even have some positive effects. For example, it can serve as a food plant if your dog likes to nibble on something green. The leaves and stems of balsam are rich in vitamin C and minerals and can aid digestion. Balsam can also be used as a medicinal plant if your dog has a small wound. The leaves contain tannins that have a hemostatic and anti-inflammatory effect. You can simply crush them and place them on the wound.

Another advantage of balsam is that it is a good source of food for bees and other insects. This is important for biodiversity and the pollination of other plants. So if you go for a walk with your dog and see balsam, you can be happy that you are doing something for nature.

What are the disadvantages of balsam for dogs?

However, balsam also has some disadvantages for dogs that you should be aware of. Firstly, it can lead to allergic reactions if your dog is sensitive to the plant. This can manifest itself, for example, as a skin rash, itching or breathing difficulties. If you notice such symptoms in your dog, you should consult a vet.

On the other hand, balsam can also be dangerous if your dog eats too much of it or swallows the seeds. This can lead to gastrointestinal problems such as diarrhea or vomiting. The seeds can also get stuck in your dog's fur or ears and cause irritation or infection. You should therefore check your dog thoroughly after every walk and remove any seeds.

 

Balsam is an interesting plant that has both advantages and disadvantages for dogs. It is not poisonous to dogs and can be used as a food or medicinal plant. However, it is also an invasive species that displaces native plants and can cause allergic reactions or gastrointestinal problems.
