You may have heard of aronia berries, also known as health berries or chokeberries. They are rich in vitamins, minerals and antioxidants and have many positive effects on human and animal health. But what is aronia berry pomace and how can you use it for your dog?

What is aronia pomace?

Aronia pomace is the by-product of aronia juice production. The berries are pressed and the juice bottled. The leftover pomace still contains many valuable ingredients such as tannins, pectins and vitamins. It has a dark purple color and a tart, sour taste.

How does aronia pomace affect dogs?

Aronia pomace can be used as a food supplement or as a tea for dogs. It has the following benefits:

  • It supportsthe natural function of the immune system through its antioxidant effect.
  • It aidsdigestion due to its fiber and pectins.
  • Itcan help with skin problems due to its anti-inflammatory properties.

But beware: Aronia pomace also has some disadvantages:

  • It can cause diarrhea or flatulence in sensitive dogs due to its high tannin content.
  • Itcan influence the effect of medication due to its interaction with certain enzymes.
  • Itcan lead to an overdose of vitamin K if fed in large quantities.

How to dose chokeberry pomace for dogs?

The dosage of aronia pomace depends on the dog's weight and state of health. In general, less is more. As a rule of thumb, you can use the following quantities per day:

  • For small dogs (up to 10 kg): 1 teaspoon
  • For medium dogs (10 to 25 kg) : 2 teaspoons
  • For large dogs (over 25 kg): 3 teaspoons

You can mix the pomace into the food or prepare it as a tea. To do this, pour hot water over the pomace and leave to infuse for about 10 minutes. Then let the tea cool down and give it to your dog to drink.

 

Aronia pomace is a healthy supplement for your dog that has many benefits for his immune system, digestion and skin. However, you should only feed it in moderation and watch out for possible side effects.
