A representation of Acerola cherry

Acerola is a tropical fruit that is also known as the Barbados cherry or West Indian cherry. It originally comes from Mexico and is considered one of the plants richest in vitamin C in the world. But what does acerola have to do with dogs and what advantages and disadvantages does it have for our four-legged friends?

The benefits of acerola for dogs

Vitamin C is an important antioxidant that protects cells from free radicals and supports the immune system. It is also involved in many metabolic processes, such as collagen formation, wound healing and iron absorption. Dogs can produce vitamin C themselves in their liver from glucose, but only in small quantities compared to other animals. An additional supply of vitamin C from natural sources such as acerola can therefore be useful, especially for older or sick dogs or in stressful situations.

Acerola also has other ingredients that can be beneficial for dogs' health. These include flavonoids, carotenoids, minerals and fiber. Among other things, these can aid digestion, improve eyesight and have an anti-inflammatory effect.

The disadvantages of acerola for dogs

Acerola may be a natural product, but that doesn't mean it can't have side effects. Too much vitamin C can lead to diarrhea or bladder stones in some dogs. It can also interact with certain medications or aggravate existing illnesses.

The quality and origin of acerola products can also vary. Not all are certified organic or free from additives. You should therefore always find out about the ingredients and only choose trustworthy suppliers.

Acerola can be a valuable addition to your dog's diet if you pay attention to a few points. It can provide him with more vitamin C and other healthy substances that can increase his well-being. But it is not a miracle cure and should always be used with caution.
